Rules for the Election

    • Faculty from the Department of Earth and Space Sciences cannot be nominated since that department has continuing representation.
    • Each Department and each School within a College can have at most one representative on the university wide Tenure and Promotion Committee.
    • Membership on the committee is restricted to the following structure: 2 faculty representatives from each of the five academic Colleges and 1 faculty representative from the non-classroom faculty.
    • The election is decided by a majority of those casting votes unless such results violate the previous rules or the number of candidates does not exceed the number of positions to fill. In the later case, each candidate will be voted on by an approve/disapprove ballot.
    • Each candidate selected counts as a cast vote.

Lauri Hyers


Department: Psychology

When faculty go before TeP, they are facing one of the most significant tests of their career. I will never forget the anxiety I felt the first time I went before TeP more than ten years ago, as if I was going to meet the great Oz. In the fifteen years since that fateful day, I have tried to assure my colleagues that WCU’s tenure and promotion process is fair and transparent. Early in my career here at WCU, I began work with a dedicated group colleagues to found WCU’s Faculty Mentoring Program, to promote an inclusive culture of mentoring on our campus. I have served on other university-wide committees dedicated to faculty development, including CELT and SaLe, and currently serve on the Tenure and Promotion Committee of my home department (Psychology). My research, teaching, and service experiences at WCU have involved both undergraduate and graduate programs and interdisciplinary as well as international collaborations. As Tenure and Promotion Committee College of the Sciences and Mathematics Representative, I would be dedicated to ensuring a fair and supportive tenure and promotion process for all faculty.

Peter Loedel


Department: Political Science

Dear Colleagues, I previously served on TEP (now over 8 years ago) and thus have experience with the demands and expectations of the position. My philosophy of approaching this important position was, and is, equity and fairness. I also followed the guidelines provided by the CBA as well as being respectful of department statement of expectations. I also feel that I have a strong interdisciplinary perspective, including working with many faculty in the CSM. Finally, I have a deep understanding of the teacher-scholar model at WCU and the demands of our faculty in terms of teaching, research, and service. Thank you for your consideration.
