Rules for the Election

    • Each department can have at most one representative on the university wide Tenure and Promotion Committee.

    • The election is decided by majority of those casting votes unless such results violate the previous rules or the number of candidates does not exceed the number of positions to fill. In the later case, each candidate will be voted on by an approve/disapprove ballot. If an insufficient number of candidates recieve a majority, a run-off election will be held between the top two elligible candidates. If there is only one elligible candidate for such a run-off, an approve/disapprove ballot will be used.
    • Vacant seats will be filled one at a time with the current vacant seat filled by the candidate with the highest vote count. As each seat is filled, the candidate filling that seat and any other candidates from the same department as the candidate filling that seat will be disqualified. Votes cast for disqualified candidates, as just defined, will not be considered in filling remaining vacant seats.
    • Each candidate selected counts as a cast vote.

I am running for a second term on TeP because I am strongly committed to insuring that faculty are treated equitably in the tenure and promotion process. As a member of the committee, I bring my experiences as department chair, interim associate dean, and chair of SaLe to my review of faculty binders and TeP committee discussions. My time on the committee thus far has strengthened my appreciation for the variety of approaches to teaching, scholarship, and service found across campus, especially as faculty work to balance the significant demands of our positions. Service on TeP has also helped to broaden my understanding of the T&P process, allowing me to further support faculty and insure that they are given fair consideration. I would greatly appreciate your support.

Colleagues: Reviewing and assessing the accomplishments of faculty, as they proceed along their career trajectories, represents the most sobering responsibility that falls to those who must evaluate the performance of faculty. As Chair of a department, I have had 11 years’ experience in that capacity. And as a member of the Promotion and Tenure Workshop Committee for two years, I have assisted in making the process fair, understandable, and, hopefully, a bit less stressful. I am intimately familiar with the balance that faculty must achieve in devoting time and resources to their teaching, their scholarly activities and to service to their departments and the University. Moreover, having served on the Faculty Development Committee, I am acquainted with the varied forms of scholarship across the College and the University. Finally, I believe that my multi- and interdisciplinary background is an asset. These experiences will likely prove useful for service on TeP, a Committee that helps shape the trajectory of this University. I ask for your support. If elected, I pledge my energy and commitment to this important work.
