Rules for the Election

    • Each department can have at most one representative on the university wide Tenure and Promotion Committee.
    • Membership on the committee is restricted to the following structure: 4 faculty representatives from the College of Arts and Sciences, 1 faculty representative from each of the Schools of Health Sciences, Education, Music, and Business and Public Affairs, and 1 faculty representative from the non-classroom faculty.
    • The election is decided by a plurality of those casting votes unless such results violate the previous rules or the number of candidates does not exceed the number of positions to fill. In the later case, each candidate will be voted on by an approve/disapprove ballot.
    • Vacant seats will be filled one at a time with the current vacant seat filled by the candidate with the highest vote count. As each seat is filled, the candidate filling that seat and any other candidates from the same department as the candidate filling that seat will be disqualified. Votes cast for disqualified candidates, as just defined, will not be considered in filling remaining vacant seats.
    • Each candidate selected counts as a cast vote.

Service on Tep is a full-time commitment. Its members need to be aware of changing and emerging issues that affect tenure and promotion, including—but not limited to—the expanding nature of academic disciplines, new pedagogies, the use of technology in the classroom, and an understanding of the actual and potential scholarly contributions of faculty. I will bring to Tep a broad range of experience in university service, scholarship and teaching, knowledge of how to evaluate the often "invisible" contributions of faculty, and a record of responsible and accountable campus leadership. I believe that I am an effective advocate for faculty campus-wide, and ask for your support.

C. Gil Wiswall

Department: Geology & Astronomy

My interest in the peer evaluation process began at a SSHE Faculty Development Workshop in 1990 that focused on the expanded definition of scholarship proposed by Ernest Boyer in Scholarship Revisited. Since then, I have devoted much of my service activities on campus toward improving the faculty evaluation process at WCU. Specifically, I have served four terms on TeP and chaired the Tenure and Promotion Task Force. As a result of these activities, I have developed a working knowledge of tenure and promotion policies, procedures, and criteria both current and proposed. More important, I have had the opportunity to observe the institution as a whole. I have gained an appreciation for the breadth and quality of the teaching, scholarship, and service that occurs at WCU. I hope to continue making contributions based on my experience and perspective.
