Jen Bacon

Department: English

Over the past ten years, I’ve had a range of experiences related to the budgeting process and feel I could be a quick learner and active participant in thinking through budgetary issues. In 2009-10, I co-chaired the President’s Academic Year Model (AYM) Task Force, which investigated the funding model and made recommendations for improving it — many of which were later adopted. I served on the Fiscal Subgroup for the Strategic Planning Process, and worked for two years in the CAS Dean’s office as the Faculty Associate for Scheduling and Data Analysis. Most recently, I served on the Provost’s Task Force for Tuition by Credit. I have also served on the Executive Committee for APSCUF at the state level, the body that assures the fiscal responsibility for that organization. I am currently the chair of the English Department, and in that role I have introduced a routine budget reporting practice that makes the expenses for the department transparent for the entire faculty. If elected, I will work to ensure a similar transparency in our budgeting processes, and to develop communication and education strategies that help make budgetary information understandable and useful to the university community.

Department: Communication Studies

I seek your support to serve as one of the Council of Chairs representatives for the new university budget committee. I believe my broad university experience (Special Assistant to the Provost, member of TEP, member of the Strategic Plan Assessment and Advocacy Committee, etc.) and my eight years as a department chair, gives me a broad university perspective to represent the unique needs of our departments and programs. In addition, I believe my personal attributes and communication skills will enable me to serve on the committee in a pragmatic, reasonable, and collegial way. I appreciate your support of my candidacy.
