Department: Psychology

Dear Colleagues,

I respectfully request your vote. I have served on the Faculty Senate Executive Committee for several years, including for two terms as President. Currently, I serve as the Senate Liaison to President Weisenstein’s Cabinet and to the Council of Trustees. Through these roles, I have advocated successfully for faculty and student interests.

I have enjoyed working collaboratively with my colleagues on the Faculty Senate, on APSCUF, and beyond to tackle a number of important issues related to campus climate. In the past year or so, among other things, our advocacy efforts have been instrumental in securing:

1) our right to maintain a “no weapons” policy on our campus; 2) enhanced safety and resources for faculty and students at the Philadelphia site; 3) institutional response to incidents of racism and related incivility; 4) a plan for enhanced coordination of diversity initiatives; 5) improvements to the sexual misconduct policy; 6) greater resources for the Counseling Center; 7) a more transparent budgeting process; and 8) greater faculty involvement in institutional decision making processes.

The greater faculty involvement includes: the creation of the liaisons to the President’s Cabinet and the Council of Trustees; mechanisms for involving faculty in decisions regarding tuition models and new external operations such as exploration of a branch campus; and a recent commitment to a new budget committee with significant faculty representation.

The present era hosts considerable challenges for public higher education. There are important decisions to be made and I believe faculty must be well informed about the issues and meaningfully involved in the decision making. I believe the next few years will be critical for solidifying the steps we have recently taken to enhance faculty involvement in institutional decision making. The relationships I have with faculty and administrators position me well to play a useful role. I would be honored to have the opportunity to continue to serve you through the Faculty Senate. I appreciate your consideration and your support.

Sincerely yours,

Ellie

Julie Wiest

Department: Anthropology & Sociology

I have served as a Faculty Senate proxy for two years. Although I have enjoyed serving in this capacity, I would be honored to represent the College of Arts and Sciences faculty with a seat on Senate. I take very seriously the need for this body and would work hard to help ensure that faculty needs are addressed and that faculty perspectives are considered in university decision-making. In addition, Senate provides a fantastic opportunity for a junior faculty member (such as myself) to become more familiar with university operations and actively participate in the university community. Thank you for considering me.
