Department: Educational Development -PMAA

Dear Colleagues, I would like to be considered for one of the Senate’s At-Large positions. Working as a Faculty Academic Advisor in the Pre-Major Advising Center, I am interested in student development issues with particular emphasis on retention, student success and their academic and social integration at the university. I have been a proud advocate of students and it will be great to serve in a formal capacity and contribute to discussions and decisions that affect the social and academic development of our students, while sharing my experiences with faculty. Having served on department ad-hoc committees, retention initiative committees in other universities, and a coordinator of the WCU’s minority male retention program (Brother-to-Brother), I strongly believe that I will be a great addition to the Senate.

Lynne Cooke

Department: English

I am a junior faculty member in the English Department, and I have served as an At-Large member on the Faculty Senate for the past 3 years. I have been and will continue to be an active Faculty Senate member. I was on the Sustainability Committee for 2 years, and I am currently Chair of the Communication Committee. I would appreciate your support in this election. Thank you.

Eli DeHope

Department: Undergraduate Social Work

I have proudly been a member of the Faculty Senate since 2002 and within the past three years have been elected President and currently am serving as Immediate Past President. I am committed to the idea that the Senate should be a place to address the climate issues that challenge or enhance our campus. I also believe that it is important for the Faculty Senate to work and coordinate with APSCUF, CAPC, TeP, the Multicultural Center, student government, the administration and any other organization that provides leadership on this campus. I believe that the Senate can be a voice for the faculty in this area of campus climate. If elected, I will continue to be active in the Faculty Senate and support its mission.

Department: Health

I am a faculty member in the Department of Health and a member of the Faculty Senate since 2008. For two years I was part of the Faculty Welfare Committee and this year joined the Student Welfare Committee. I ask for your support in this election so that I can continue as a member of the Senate and to serve on the Student Welfare Committee to help with projects to benefit our students such as WCU CARES. Thank you for your consideration.

Kurt Kolasinski

Department: Chemistry

I would appreciate your support to allow me to better serve WCU as a member of the Faculty Senate. As co-chair of the WCU's Sustainability Advisory Committee, a position I've held since 2009, I would be a natural fit for the Senate's Facilities & Sustainability Committee. I also have extensive experience with establishing national and international research collaborations, and integrating research into undergraduate education. Your vote will allow me to apply my experience and energy to furthering WCU's goals.

Julian Onderdonk

Department: Music History and Literature

Senate is an important meeting point for faculty from across campus--a place to socialize but also discover points of connection between Departments and Colleges. It also plays a significant role in carrying out our mandate for shared governance, as the Senate is frequently consulted by the WCU Administration and has a strong presence on campus-wide search and many other committees. Finally, the Senate's recent decision to focus on Campus Climate as part of its mission places it at the center of crucial issues facing faculty, staff and students. I have served on the Senate for some years to help forge these connections and encourage these developments; it would be my privilege to continue to do so into the future.

Heather Schugar

Department: Literacy

As a junior faculty member, I became informally involved with Faculty Senate in 2010-2011 because I wanted to participate in cross-campus communication about issues important to the growth and welfare of our faculty and students. I am now seeking the opportunity to have a more formal, active role in the Senate. I have a particular interest in research initiatives and student welfare at the university, and believe I would be a valuable collaborator as a committee member in these areas. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Paul Smith

Department: Kinesiology

As a long-time member of the Faculty Senate, I seek your vote for re-election to this prestigious body. I have served as President of the Faculty Senate for two terms, Chair of the Curriculum and Research Committee for several terms, and member of several ad hoc committees over the years. I consider the Faculty Senate to be one of the most important and viable avenues for faculty input to the University and pledge to continue to serve, if re-elected, to the best of my ability.

Paul K. Smith, Ph.D. Department of Kinesiology

Department: Theatre and Dance

It has been my honor and pleasure to serve on Faculty Senate for the past three years. I would gladly accept the challenge of working through transitions in our current changing climate that would best serve our faculty and our university community. I am faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance, and am currently working with the Communications committee on Faculty Senate. I would appreciate your support in this election. Many thanks.
