Thomas Legg

Department: History

Sabbaticals are one of the greatest opportunities that academics have to help fulfill their teaching, service, and scholarly agendas, free of having to teach four classes at the same time. I see the types of projects that deserve sabbatical recognition broadly, realizing that individual faculty have their own unique professional goals. I have previously served two terms on this committee, and worked hard to make sure that every application received a full and thorough hearing. Additionally, I previously served four years as Department Chair where I truly came to see the varied and unique ways that faculty members fulfill their professional obligations. I vow to make sure that every applicant and application will be treated fully, fairly, and with an open mind to our faculty's many talents.

Maria Van Liew

Department: Languages and Cultures

Having accrued 17 years of experience at WCU in tandem with the university's consideration of our teaching goals, mentoring, advising, research agendas and service, I would like the opportunity to serve on a committee that reviews requests for recognition in these same areas. I have served as chair on numerous successful tenure-track searches at the departmental level, and I very much appreciate the collaborative spirit of these endeavors.

Graham MacPhee

Department: English

I believe that sabbaticals form a vital element of faculty professional development and make a key contribution to teaching and learning, as well as to faculty scholarship and the wider research mission of the university.

I have served on the Sabbatical and Educational Leave Committee for the last two years and have really valued the chance to play a part in supporting the amazing variety of sabbatical projects approved over that period. My previous relevant experience includes serving as chair of the Faculty Grant Development Committee/University Research Committee and as a member of the CAS Faculty Development Committee. I believe in a supportive, rigorous, and fair approach to sabbatical evaluation, and I have enjoyed the spirit of genuine appreciation and intellectual curiosity among members of the SaLE committee. I would be honored to serve a further term on the committee.

Department: Geology and Astronomy

Sabbatical leaves are very important faculty development period in the academic career of the faculty. By serving on Sabbatical and Educational leave committee I would support WCU faculty in their creative and scholarly activity that go beyond the classroom academic experience.

Rosemary Sullivan

Department: Mathematics

Faculty strive to achieve the goals outlined in the teacher-scholar model. All creative and meaningful endeavors require time. Sabbaticals grant time for individuals to engage in important projects that are simply not possible while teaching twelve credits. Being on a committee that fairly and thoroughly reviews applications for such proposals would be both exciting and rewarding. I would like the opportunity to know, learn and work with my colleagues from across the university. Thank you for your support.
