I am interested in serving as a CAS representative to the Sabbatical and Educational Leave Committee. I feel strongly that sabbatical/educational leave is essential to the professional development of our faculty, contributing to our university's faculty/scholar model. I have related university-wide experience with professional development matters through my service to the Faculty Mentoring Committee as member, mentor, Chair, and Program Coordinator. I am Associate Professor in the Psychology Department and currently on sabbatical leave for this spring semester, writing up several research projects on Gender Socialization. I would like to help maintain this valuable faculty development resource for all.

Department: Communication Studies

I would like very much to serve another term on the Sabbatical and Education Leave Committee because there’s no substitute for an extended block of time to read, think, study, create, and write about ideas. I’d be delighted to continue to work on this committee to help other faculty members receive sabbaticals.

Faculty at WCU are committed to high-quality teaching in a way that is increasingly rare these days. But the other side of the 'equation' here is that we don't lose our sense of ourselves as scholars and inquiring minds. And that's why sabbaticals are a vital component of the WCU mix: I see the role of the sabbatical as crucial to the broader functioning of the university as a whole and of immediate benefit to all that we do.

I would be honored to serve as a CAS representative on the Sabbatical and Educational Leave Committee, and would endeavor to treat each application on its merits and in an absolutely fair and even-handed way. I have experience on university and college wide committees, and I have demonstrated my commitment to the institutional importance of research through participation in the Research Consortium, Research Day, the Faculty Grant Development Committee, and the National/Transnational/Global Cultures Research Group.
