Department: Nutrition

Dear Colleagues, I am an associate professor of nutrition and I am very interested in serving on the Council on Undergraduate Research as the College of Health Sciences Representative. I have used students in research for many years and have had the pleasure to participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI) program. I greatly admire the undergraduate programs that are supported by this committee. They are extremely valuable to our students by allowing them to gain interest and provide opportunities for research. Not just participation in the research process, but also the presentation of findings at Research Day. These are truly amazing opportunities that students can take with them into their professional careers. If elected, I look forward to continuing to support the campus opportunities that highlight undergraduate research.

Department: Health

Hello colleagues. I would like to be part of the Council on Undergraduate Research because I see research as a means for students to explore their passions and interests and gain valuable skills in the process. I enjoy helping students refine a research question, use the appropriate methods to answer the question, and write up the results. In my time at WCU in the BS in Public Health program, I have mentored several students on research projects and have contributed to the development of student-led posters and presentations at both national and regional conferences. Since core elements of my research include immigration, health disparities, and race, my students gain a better appreciation of the reproduction of inequality as well as diversity through their work with me. Given my combined background in public health and sociology, I am well-positioned to mentor students in a variety of disciplines. In addition, I have judged research papers and posters across disciplines for undergraduate research awards at my previous institution. I ask that you thoughtfully consider my application for the College of Health Sciences representative for the Council for Undergraduate Research.

Department: Sports Medicine

Hello colleagues. I currently serve on the Council for Undergraduate Research (CUR). I have thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this council and would like to continue my service. Over the past few years I have helped to further develop the Student Undergraduate Research Institute (SURI) including reviewing and developing the program and evaluating applications. I have served as a Research Day oral and poster presentation judge for the Fall and Spring WCU Research Day events each year and assist in reviewing Research Day applications, among other service around undergraduate research at WCU. Participating on this Council has allowed me to examine and appreciate how undergraduate research is integral in academia and lifelong learning (including publishing with students in our own undergraduate peer-reviewed journal, Ramifications!) and I hope to continue to work for this important aspect of higher education for our students. Thank you for considering me for this position.
