Megan Corbin

Department: Languages and Cultures

As a first generation undergraduate student at the University of Minnesota, I was lucky to have been given the opportunity to participate in research as a part of my Honors capstone project. That experience was formative for me as a scholar, helping change my plans from pursuing a law degree to going to graduate school and continuing to work with the faculty member who had been my adviser on that research project. I would not be at WCU today without that initial undergraduate research experience. I am asking for your support for another term on the Council of Undergraduate Research as a representative for our college. Over this past term, I served as Vice Chair and then Chair of the Council. I helped plan and support the Summer Undergraduate Research Institute over the past three years and mentored a student on her research project for one of those summers. I represented CUR on the administrative search to hire the current VP of Research and Creative Activities. I also worked with David Bolton to create "Ramifications" - an undergraduate research journal for WCU. We are well on our way to publishing our first issue with 7 undergraduate essays working their way through the peer review process. I am passionate about supporting undergraduate research on our campus and am confident that the knowledge I've gained over this past term on CUR will help me continue to serve our students in this area in the future. I hope that you will vote for me so that I can continue to have a direct role in developing these opportunities for our students.

Roger Gatchet

Department: Communication and Media

I have served on the faculty in the College of Arts and Humanities for four years. During that time, I have had the opportunity to work with many undergraduate and graduate students to promote and support their research, both on campus as well as at regional academic conventions. I would love to continue to do this important work as part of the Council for Undergraduate Research.

Department: Art + Design

During my 13 years at WCU, I have actively engaged in service to the university as a member of the Sustainability Advisory Council, the Poetry Center Faculty Advisory Committee, Faculty Senate and as an APSCUF Department Representative. More specifically related to research, I’ve served as a member of the Sustainability Research and Creative Activities Committee and am currently working on designing a campus pigment garden. I’ve been involved in Research Day as a presenter, as a reviewer of student research projects and as a faculty advisor for student research projects.

My commitment to my own scholarly and creative research has been supported by grant funding and sabbatical leave through the university, as well as national recognition from various arts organizations.

I am constantly amazed by the wide range of research interests our students are engaged in at WCU and hope to support them in a larger capacity by serving as a member of the Council on Undergraduate Research. Thank you for your consideration.
