Nominations close Apr 9, 2014.
Regular Faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences may be nominated.

Rules for the Election

    • Faculty wishing to be considered for BOTH an At-Large seat and a college seat must self-nominate in BOTH elections. No more than three faculty from any department may serve on CAPC simultaneously and no more than two faculty from any department may hold College seats. At-Large elections will conclude prior to the College Seat elections. (Effective starting spring 2012).
    • Each department can have at most two representatives on CAPC.
    • The election is decided by a plurality of those casting votes unless such results violate the previous rule or the number of candidates does not exceed the number of positions to fill. In the later case, each candidate will be voted on by an approve/disapprove ballot.
    • Vacant seats will be filled one at a time with the current vacant seat filled by the candidate with the highest vote count. As each seat is filled, the candidate filling that seat and any other candidates from the same department as the candidate filling that seat will be disqualified. Votes cast for disqualified candidates, as just defined, will not be considered in filling remaining vacant seats.
    • Each candidate selected counts as a cast vote.
    • Members elected to at-large seats cannot be nominated for school representative seats.
    • Seats with longer terms will be filled first. In the case of an approve/disapprove ballot, candidates will be ranked according to number of approve votes.

Josh Auld

Department: Biology

I am finishing a one-year (my first) term on CAPC where I have served on the Graduate Programs and Policies Committee. During this year, I have learned a great deal and I would be grateful for the opportunity to continue serving on CAPC. Serving in this fashion affords me the opportunity to extend my departmental service (as Assessment Coordinator and a member of the Biology Department Graduate and Curriculum Committees) to the University level.

Thank you for your time and support.

Mary Braz

Department: Communication Studies

I welcome the opportunity to continue my service to the campus community in the position of CAPC College of Arts and Sciences Representative.

I am completing my first term on CAPC and am a member of the Academic Review Committee where I chaired the Low Enrollment Advisory Committee. My experience on this committee, along with my previous service as a CAPC proxy member, has strengthened my understanding of curricular policies and issues at WCU. I would value the opportunity to continue learning and serving in this role.

If elected, I will continue to serve with a commitment to the mission and values of the university. Thank you for your consideration.

Department: Biology

As a graduate coordinator, I recently had the experience updating biology graduate courses, and hope to learn more by serving on the CAPC.

Mark McKibben

Department: Mathematics

I joined the Mathematics Department this year after having worked as a tenured professor of mathematics at Goucher College for 13 years. During my tenure at Goucher, I had the privilege of serving on the Curriculum Committee and would very much enjoy the opportunity to serve in this capacity at West Chester University. Thank you for your consideration.

Andrew Sargent

Department: English

I’ve been fortunate to serve for the last two years on the Course Review and Revalidation Subcommittee of CAPC’s Academic Review Committee. In that capacity, I’ve enjoyed getting the chance to help implement WCU’s Course Inactivation Policy and contribute to discussions about class size and priority scheduling. In the English Department, I’ve overseen the process of ensuring that CAPC-mandated language appears on all of our I, J, and W course syllabi. These experiences have made me realize that there’s a misperception out there that CAPC is some sort of punitive bureaucratic entity designed to enforce compliance from faculty, rather than what it actually is: a model of faculty self-governance and an essential means for faculty to make sure that the educational experience we’re offering our students is cohesive, rigorous, thoughtful, and stimulating. I’d be grateful for the opportunity to continue serving on CAPC to contribute to this ongoing mission. Thanks for your time and consideration.

Geeta Shivde

Department: Psychology

I would welcome the opportunity to serve the university community as a member of CAPC. West Chester University has an excellent reputation based on the quality of our teaching and commitment to student learning; and a significant part of that stems from having faculty control of our curriculum and teaching practices. In my previous service, I have represented the faculty senate on the provost’s Academic Planning Advisory Committee, and on an ad hoc committee to provide feedback on the new university strategic plan. In the Psychology Department, I am currently serving on the assessment committee and have been involved in revising our undergraduate program goals. In my own teaching experiences, I have taught high-impact research courses, as well as large lecture general education courses. I hope to contribute to CAPC by bringing this variety of experiences to the process of curriculum planning and approval.

Department: Biology

I firmly believe FACULTY control of the curriculum is essential. I will work hard to maintain that control.

Kuhio Walters

Department: English

I have served on CAPC over the last three years -- first as a proxy, then as a member of the Program Review Subcommittee, and currently on the Undergraduate Policies Committee. As a member of the English Department trained in the teaching of writing, I’m particularly invested in continuing this service in order to work closely with policies relevant to our Writing Emphasis curricula. If elected again to CAPC, I will eagerly pursue this work on behalf of our students, my colleagues, and the University.
