Rules for the Election

    • Each department can have at most two representatives on CAPC.
    • The election is decided by a plurality of those casting votes unless such results violate the previous rule or the number of candidates does not exceed the number of positions to fill. In the later case, each candidate will be voted on by an approve/disapprove ballot.
    • Vacant seats will be filled one at a time with the current vacant seat filled by the candidate with the highest vote count. As each seat is filled, the candidate filling that seat and any other candidates from the same department as the candidate filling that seat will be disqualified. Votes cast for disqualified candidates, as just defined, will not be considered in filling remaining vacant seats.
    • Each candidate selected counts as a cast vote.
    • Members elected to at-large seats cannot be nominated for school representative seats.
    • Seats with longer terms will be filled first. In the case of an approve/disapprove ballot, candidates will be ranked according to number of approve votes.

Wayne Hanley

Department: History

Having previously served on CAPC, I am quite familiar with the expectations of serving on the committee and would welcome the opportunity to serve again. I would bring not only that previous experience with me into the position, but I have worked with the secondary education program (social studies) since arriving at WCU eight years ago and am very well acquainted with the challenges associated with the secondary education programs on campus, as well as NCATE and PDE mandates associated with those programs. My chief concern is the maintaining of the academic integrity of all our academic programs in the face of external (and sometimes, internal) pressures.

Helen Schroepfer

Department: Philosophy

I am very excited about the opportunity to serve on CAPC! My appetite for this work has been whetted while acting as proxy for my colleague, Joan Woolfrey, during her sabbatical this spring. I am in my third year in the philosophy department, and am eager for wider university service. Creating a curriculum that responds to current issues and student needs is central to what I have accomplished thus far in my department, and I would like to continue this focus on CAPC. I spent this past year updating our religious studies curriculum to be more reflective of the dynamic nature of the discipline and more responsive to the needs of our students. In conjunction with this, I have designed three new courses that have been approved by CAPC over the past three years: Religion in America, Women and Religion, and Introduction to Islam. In addition to serving on a number of department committees, I am also currently serving on the Women’s Studies Steering Committee, the CAS Recruitment Committee, and the Student Research Award Committee. I am also participating in the Curriculum Integration Seminar this semester.

Carolyn Sorisio

Department: English

Throughout my nine years in the Department of English, I have had a sustained interest in program development and assessment.

As a member of our departmental curriculum committee, I participated in our ambitious and successful restructuring of our major to its current B.A. in English. I have also served on and chaired the departmental committee that was in charge of the oversight and assessment of the B.A. in Literature and general education literature courses. I was our department’s Assessment Coordinator for one year, during which time I oversaw the revision of several of our department’s assessment plans.

Most recently, I have served the university community as a CAS representative to TeP. I do not intend to seek another term on TeP, and I would enjoy turning my attention to CAPC as a CAS representative.

Tim Starn

Department: Chemistry

I appreciate the service that others have done as representatives to CAPC, and I wish the opportunity to do my part.

Paul Wolfson

Department: Mathematics

During my years as a member of CAPC, I have worked on many committees and served as Executive Secretary. With the coming of a new administration, it will be important to have experienced members on CAPC who are prepared to work to protect faculty professional interests and to maintain the highest possible academic standards. If elected, I will continue this work.
