Rules for the Election

    • The departments of Mathematics, Astronomy/Geology, Communications, and Psychology have continuing representation on CAPC by school representatives. Faculty from these departments should not be nominated for this election.
    • Each department can have at most one school or college representative on CAPC.

    • Vacant seats will be filled one at a time with the current vacant seat filled by the candidate with the highest vote count. As each seat is filled, the candidate filling that seat and any other candidates from the same department as the candidate filling that seat will be disqualified. Votes cast for disqualified candidates, as just defined, will not be considered in filling remaining vacant seats.
    • Each candidate selected counts as a cast vote.
    • Members elected to at-large seats cannot be nominated for school representative seats.
    • Seats with longer terms will be filled first. In the case of an approve/disapprove ballot, candidates will be ranked according to number of approve votes.

Virginia M. da Costa

Department: Art

As an assistant art history professor in the Art Department, I am interested in supporting and promoting sound changes in the curriculum and policies currently in effect at West Chester University. In my third year here at WCU, I have served on the University Festival Committee, and currently serve on the CAS Recruitment Committee as well as the CAS Outstanding Student Committee. I also participated in a subcommittee dedicated to the interdisciplinary segment of the General Education Committee. Additionally, I am a participating member of the Learning Community. My interest is in having our academic curriculum foster the kind of students who will spend their years at WCU as valuable members of their respective departments, university and the community. Many relevant issues have come to light while I have been here: recruitment and retention of minority students, special programs for disabled students and focusing on our high value students - those who volunteer, work and participate in university programs as well as academics. I am committed to the welfare of our students not only in the Art Department but the general university population as many of the art history courses I teach fulfill general education requirements as well as multiculturalism and diversity. I believe that the arts add to a fully developed curriculum and I have contributed as guest speaker or contributor for several professors. Thank you for considering my nomination.

Judith Greenamyer

Department: Biology

I have been on CAPC for 6 years, serving on the graduate subcommittee and CUAAP. I have been in the thick of the arguments over how to implement the Academic Passport since it was first suggested by Harrisburg. I have also been involved with the Passport's subsequent impact on our general education program. During the recent proposed revisions to the general education program, I have tried to address the concerns of many different faculty, including those outside the Biology Department. I would like to continue on CAPC to ensure a quality education with equal application of academic policies to all students, whether they start here or transfer in.

John Hanson

Department: English

As a newcomer to WCU, I will bring a new perspective to addressing issues of academic freedom and responsibility. I would also support changes to strengthen the curriculum and improve faculty working conditions. I have served in the Faculty Senate at other universities and believe I can make a difference here at WCU. Also, as a former education writer for major newspapers, I believe I have a better understanding of the major issues in higher education. I would be honored to serve and respectfully ask your support.

Lisa Kirschenbaum

Department: History

I have been involved in curriculum review and development in a variety of capacities. I am currently completing a term on the Faculty Senate, where as a member of the curriculum and research committee I researched issues such as diversity requirements at comparable universities. I have also served as a member of the Secondary Education Advisory Committee. I helped to organize a State System Symposium on "Balancing the Science, Math, Engineering, and Technology Curriculum" that took place in Harrisburg in March. Currently, I am a CAPC proxy. I look forward to bringing my experience and enthusiasm to CAPC.

Fred Patton

Department: Foreign languages

I was recently elected to CAPC for a one-semester term. If I am re-elected as CAS representative to CAPC, I will continue to support the principle that academic programs of the university must remain in the hands of faculty. Now that I have begun to learn how CAPC works (during the recent critical period of the approval of the new General Education requirements), I hope to have the opportunity to continue to serve Arts and Sciences and the University in this capacity.

Anne Herzog

Department: English

The recent process of revising WCU's General Education Program has made clear the importance of CAPC's work in strengthening and securing a high quality education for WCU students. While I have served on the Faculty Senate, the University Forum, and other campus-wide working committees, I have not had the opportunity to focus on the academic and curricular matters designated as CAPC's. I would be happy to do so as an At-large representative to CAPC.
