Joshua Raclaw

Department: English

Joshua Raclaw is in his fifth year at WCU and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English and Director of the Program in Linguistics. Since arriving at WCU, I have become deeply acquainted with the goals and work of CAPC while proposing and creating new courses, reviving sunset courses, and adding new Gen Ed designations to existing courses. Through my work as Linguistics Program Director and my three years of ongoing service to my department's BA curriclum committee, I have developed a deep interest in curricular policies, and I look forward to expanding that interest while serving the campus community as a member of CAPC. As an academic linguist, my research and teaching interests span multiple disciplines in both the humanities (English, communication and media, women's and gender studies) and the social sciences, and I hope to draw on that breadth of disciplinary knowledge to best serve the varied academic policy needs and concerns of all of our faculty.

Andrew Sargent

Department: English

I’ve felt very fortunate to serve on CAPC for the past three years and would welcome the opportunity to continue this work. As chair of CAPC’s Diverse Communities subcommittee and a member of the Gen Ed committee, I’ve collaborated with colleagues to evaluate proposals and provide feedback to preparers, modernize the J Handbook, update the course criteria checklist, and offer a how-to workshop to faculty proposing J courses. One of the key things I’d like to do if elected for another term would be to contribute to the campus-wide effort to revise and strengthen WCU’s Diverse Communities curriculum so that it responds even more urgently to the challenge of creating a racially just, equitable, and inclusive society. On a more general note, I continue to be sensitive to the experiences of faculty proposers in the CIM process and would contribute to the ongoing project of making this process as collaborative, constructive, and transparent as possible. Thanks for your consideration.
