    • This is for an unfilled Department seat (Department Of Counselor Education).
    • Each department can have at most three representatives on CAPC.
    • The election is decided by a plurality of those casting votes unless such results violate the previous rule or the number of candidates does not exceed the number of positions to fill. In the later case, each candidate will be voted on by an approve/disapprove ballot.
    • Vacant seats will be filled one at a time with the current vacant seat filled by the candidate with the highest vote count. As each seat is filled, if that candidates department reaches the 3 representatives limit, any remaining candidates from the same department will be disqualified. Votes cast for disqualified candidates, as just defined, will not be considered in filling remaining vacant seats.
    • Each ballot submitted counts as a cast vote.
    • Members elected to at-large seats cannot be nominated for department representative seats.
    • Seats with longer terms will be filled first. In the case of an approve/disapprove ballot, candidates will be ranked according to number of approve votes.

Rick Howard

Department: Kinesiology- College of Health Sciences

I have served as a proxy to CAPC and have enjoyed following the agendas and outcomes even when I have not been called upon to proxy. I would like to increase my involvement by being elected at-large representative to CAPC. I appreciate your consideration of my nomination. Thank you!

Rodney Mader

Department: English

Dear Colleagues. I would very much appreciate your vote for me as an At-large Representative on CAPC. As many of you know, I have served on CAPC in many roles, including Vice Chair, Secretary, Chair of Gen Ed, and Chair of Academic Review. I currently serve as Vice Chair and a member of Undergrad Policies. I am deeply interested in both the curricular and policy aspects of CAPC, and I always want to drive toward the twin goals of student success and shared governance. We can't thrive as an institution without the former, and we're fortunate that our strong union secures the latter. Thanks for your consideration.

Adam Rainear

Department: Communication and Media

I write to ask for your support to serve as a CAPC at-large member. I hope to bring a new voice and new perspective to CAPC, because I have only been here at WCU for five years.

During that time, I have served in a variety of curricular roles, most recent being Co-Chair for the Department of Communication and Media curriculum committee, reviewing curriculum proposals and providing assistance to faculty in CIM submission and idea generation. Additionally, I presently serve on the First Year Experience Review Task Force, helping to ensure our First Year Experience course sets students up to ultimately become successful college graduates.

I have a strong interest in ensuring our curriculum and general education are designed and implemented in ways which serve our students the way a liberal arts education should: grounding them in the ability to problem solve, think logically and broadly, and offer up solutions for future problems. Today's interdisciplinary college experience requires students be apt at leveraging skills across a variety of departments, programs, and colleges to be most successful in their career. I believe I can continue to help push WCU's general education and curriculum forward with this in mind.

Thank you!

Emily Southerton

Department: Educational Foundations & Policy Studies

Hello, colleagues! Thank you for considering me for the at-large seat on the Curriculum and Academic Policies Council. I’m Emily Southerton, Assistant Professor of Learning Sciences in the College of Education and Social Work; I would be excited and honored to serve our community and represent your voice in this unique capacity. While I am new to WCU this year, I have been honing my passion, work, and expertise in interdisciplinary curricula design for the past 15 years. As a learning scientist, I study, design, and implement curricular practices that elevate learner agency and equity in educational environments. I have taught across a range of fields–humanities, computer science, and social sciences–and earned a curriculum-oriented doctoral degree in Learning Sciences and Technology Design, all of which have prepared me to represent a diverse group of WCU educators in this “at-large” seat. Thank you for your careful consideration, and I hope to get to know you all better through this shared work.
