Rules for the Election

    • Each department can have at most three representatives on CAPC.
    • The election is decided by a plurality of those casting votes unless such results violate the previous rule or the number of candidates does not exceed the number of positions to fill. In the later case, each candidate will be voted on by an approve/disapprove ballot.
    • Vacant seats will be filled one at a time with the current vacant seat filled by the candidate with the highest vote count. As each seat is filled, if that candidates department reaches the 3 representatives limit, any remaining candidates from the same department will be disqualified. Votes cast for disqualified candidates, as just defined, will not be considered in filling remaining vacant seats.
    • Each ballot submitted counts as a cast vote.
    • Members elected to at-large seats cannot be nominated for department representative seats.
    • Seats with longer terms will be filled first. In the case of an approve/disapprove ballot, candidates will be ranked according to number of approve votes.

Nicky Cattano

Department: Sports Medicine

I have enjoyed serving as the Sports Medicine Department Representative to CAPC for the past 9 years. I am seeking an at-large position due to my wide-ranging experiences with graduate programs, academic review, research, and former IRB service across WCU.

As my current term is coming to an end - I am hopeful in continuing to serve on CAPC and am seeking election to an at-large position. Thank you for your consideration.

Colleen Commisso

Department: Special Education

As the Special Education Department Representative on the Council of Professional Education (CPE), a shared governance organization, I have engaged in review of program/syllabi additions/revisions as well as new programs at the unit level. I am also the Assessment Coordinator of my department and have aligned all courses and assignments within our program to applicable competencies and standards, so I have an in-depth knowledge of the connection between competencies/standards, assignments, and instruction. Furthermore, I have developed and/or revised multiple courses within my department. I feel that these experiences would allow me to support the departments at the university to best serve students.

Wei Du

Department: Economics and Finance

Over the past 4 years, I have had the privilege of working on 3 new course proposals, 5 course revision proposals, 2 new program proposals, and 1 program revision proposal. This experience has allowed me to gain an in-depth understanding of the requirements and expectations for the curriculum review process.

I am confident that my experience as an applicant has given me a unique perspective into the needs of the faculty and student success. I would be immensely grateful for your consideration and support.

Christine Karpinski

Department: Nutrition

It has been an honor to serve on CAPC for the past eleven years. CAPC is a great example of shared governance – a concept that is at the heart of the faculty at WCU and something I am passionate about. For all but one of those eleven years, I have served on the Undergraduate Programs Committee (UGPC), and for one year I served as Chair of UGPC and on the Executive committee. My work with UGPC has been extremely fulfilling because our role is to help faculty develop their undergraduate curriculum and courses in a way that ensure fairness for all students, while staying in compliance with policies. My favorite role is facilitating our colleagues in making sense of a very complex process that often seems intimidating so that together we find the best outcome for all involved. Please consider voting for me so that I can continue serving on CAPC and doing this very important work.

Karen Mitchell

Department: Psychology

I have had the honor of serving on CAPC as the PSY Dept representative for 6 years. As a department with BS, several MS, and PsyD (doctoral) programs, I have developed broad experience in curricular matters on all levels. I also have gained experience on the Gen Ed Committee, as Interdisciplinary subcommittee chair and as the current Gen Ed Committee chair and Gen Ed Council Director. In all of these CAPC roles, I have worked diligently with colleagues across campus towards successful approval of proposals. I am also an ex officio member of CAPC Exec where I am gaining experience in policy and program issues. As Assistant Chair of PSY for several years, I understand departmental and college-level curricular concerns. Given my broad experience, I am seeking an at-large seat to allow me to represent constituents across campus more broadly in the support of student learning and success.

Andrew Snyder

Department: Art+Design

As my current term expires, I fondly reflect on my time as a CAPC representative as rewarding service to the university and my students. I am a creative problem solver and enjoy the challenge of reviewing the diverse curriculum and policies from across campus. With student success as my top priority, I look forward to serving our students through CAPC and hope to continue to bring my unique perspective to this committee and serve on this body in the upcoming term.
