Jason Bartles

Department: Languages and Cultures - Spanish

Dear colleagues, Thank you for considering my nomination! For four years, I have served on my Department's Curriculum Committee, reviewing all new proposals for courses and program changes before submission to CAPC. Currently, I serve as the Chair of that committee and am overseeing the Department's revalidation of all current General Education courses. I have created new Spanish Culture Cluster courses on the Latin American Avant-Garde and Utopian Thinking in the Americas, with Interdisciplinary, Diverse Communities, and Ethics attributes, as well as new Humanities and Writing courses, including a Global Film course and a Global Science Fiction course. Furthermore, I have worked with CAPC on the new FYE course template for Culture and Media, and I recently completed the workshop this winter for the new Ethics attribute. It would be a pleasure to begin serving the University at large and build on my experiences with the curriculum.

Patricia Davidson

Department: Nutrition

My name is Patricia Davidson and I am an Associate Professor in the Nutrition Department. I have the privilege to currently serve on CAPC as an appointed proxy for a member unable to fulfill their term. In this role, I am a member of the Program Review subcommittee and the Academic Review Committee. I have served on the departmental Curriculum Committee, both the undergraduate and graduate programs, developing new courses, transitioning traditional courses to hybrid, and creating several online courses at the undergraduate level and for the Master of Science in Community Nutrition and chaired the accreditation process for the newly developed Dietetic Internship program. Additionally, I am a member of CELT, the Provost-initiated University Writing Council, and as an instructor and team leader with the FYE initiative. These experiences have prepared me to serve on CAPC, heightened my awareness of the importance of quality educational programs and policies that support departmental accreditation standards, and to uphold our high educational standards.

This opportunity would be an honor and I seek your vote for my candidacy as an elected member of CAPC (At-large representative).

David Doorn

Department: Economics and Finance

I would welcome the opportunity to serve as one of the At-large Representatives to CAPC. I previously served as a representative from the College of Business and Public Management from 2015 to 2018. My term was up at the end of spring semester last year and I chose not to run again in order to give untenured colleagues an opportunity to serve on this important body. For my first year on CAPC I served on the General Education Committee and co-chaired the Interdisciplinary Subcommittee. This subcommittee was charged with reviewing syllabi from courses with the I designation to ensure that they still met the requirements. For those that did not, we made recommendations for the revisions needed to meet the Gen Ed requirements for an interdisciplinary course. While quite involved, this proved to be interesting work and I learned a lot about many courses and subjects I wasn’t even aware of.

In my second year on CAPC I served on the Undergraduate Policy Committee. This committee was charged with reviewing and revising/updating many of the university policies laid out in the Undergraduate Catalog. Some of those we worked on included the Undeclared Major Declaration Policy, the Attendance Verification Policy, the Accelerated Program Policy, First Year Scheduling for Honors Students, and a number of others. This also was interesting work and as a committee of colleagues from across campus we had many interesting discussions as we hashed out how these policies should be written up in the clearest and most informative way.

In the final year of my term I returned to the General Education Committee. Over the course of the academic year, this committee was focused on the upcoming implementation of the newly revised Gen Ed program. Here again we had lively discussions about many items regarding its rollout, including approval of new goals and requirements to be implemented with the program.

Having not been involved in any campus wide service activities this academic year, I find that I miss working with colleagues from across campus and especially the camaraderie exhibited as we held important discussions and made significant decisions affecting the whole campus community. I would love the opportunity to rejoin this important body as your at-large representative.

If you would like more information on my experience and qualifications, please don’t hesitate to email me for my CV (ddoorn@wcupa.edu). Thank you for your consideration.

Tara Guerriero

Department: Special Education

I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education. I began teaching at West Chester as an Adjunct Professor in 2006, and then began my Tenure-track position in 2008. Please consider me for a representative to CAPC. The curriculum that we teach is so important to our students, and I would be very interested in being a part of CAPC because it helps to ensure that our curriculum is the best that it can be. I served as a permanent proxy on CAPC during the Spring 2015 Semester, and learned a great deal about the CAPC process during that time. I served as both a member of the Council of Professional Education (CPE) Executive Committee and an advisory member of CPE for six years. One of the roles of CPE is to act as a recommending body to CAPC for curricular changes in the teacher education program. Additionally, I am a member of our Department Curriculum Committee. I believe that my roles on these committees have helped me to gain a good understanding of the curricular process across all levels of the University. Further, in my roles as my Department Assessment Coordinator, past Co-Chair and current member of the CPE Assessment and Accreditation Committee, and member of the University Assessment Advisory Committee, I have gained a lot of experience surrounding assessment that will be valuable in the overall curricular process. Additionally, in my role as Co-Chair of New Faculty Orientation (NFO), I worked closely with many different WCU groups. This helped me to gain a good perspective on how Academic Affairs functions across the University. I would love to be a member of CAPC and be able to be a part of curricular development for WCU. Thank you for your consideration.

David P. L. Jones

Department: Art + Design

Dear Colleagues,

I would be proud to join the Curriculum and Academic Policies Council as an at-large Representative for the first time this year. As a faculty member, I have had the privilege of developing new content & course offerings within our undergraduate curriculum. Notably, in 2017 I co-developed the department’s first design-specific study abroad offering, our Global Design workshop in Denmark. I believe a role within CAPC would amplify my ability to continue developing quality programming for our students, as well as expand my scope of service to the University as a dedicated member of this body.

Thank you for your consideration. I would be very grateful for your vote.

Dear Colleagues, my names is Joseph W. Moser and I am an Assistant Professor of German in the Department of Languages and Cultures. I would be honored to serve the university on CAPC as a Member-at-Large. I had the privilege of serving on CAPC and UGPC and as the Chair on the Subcommittee on Culture Cluster courses in 2018-19, as a year-long proxy for Dr. Mahmoud Amer. I have been serving as a member of the Department of Languages and Cultures Curriculum Committee since fall 2016, and I would be honored to contribute my experiences in reviewing syllabi to CAPC as a Member-at-Large. Thank you for your consideration.

James Pruitt

Department: Chemistry

I am interested in expanding the scope of my service to the University. As an Associate Professor in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Product Development, I successfully shepherded the CAPC process for a new elective course in Pharmaceutical Chemistry. I have been a member of the CAS recruitment committee and now I’m a subcommittee chairman for the Committee for Academic Excellence. I’m committed to make the new General Education requirements work for students and faculty and will be teaching a STEM FYE course in the fall. I would like your support to continue my work on guiding the curriculum at WCU.

Tabassum Fahim Ruby

Department: Women's and Gender Studies

I would be honored to be a member of CAPC. I have served as the chair of the curriculum committee for my department (Women’s and Gender Studies) for the past three years. I started that role in my first year at the university and feel I now have a solid understanding of WCU’s curricular needs and systems. At my previous institutions, I developed new courses and contributed to updating the department’s course offerings overall. I am passionate about curricular development and committed to doing the work necessary to advance the goals of CAPC.

Brent Ruswick

Department: History

Since Fall 2017 I have served, simultaneously, on CAPC's Undergraduate, Graduate, and Executive committees while also attending all general assemblies. I did so in my capacity as the facilitator of the Council for Professional Education, the curriculum-recommending body of the Professional Education Unit.

I value a review process that is transparent, collegial, purposeful, and timely. I believe I have embodied those values in my interactions with proposal-preparers, and would like to continue to do so as an at-large representative.

Esther Smidt

Department: Languages and Cultures

As TESOL Director for the 3rd year and having had the privilege of leading the TESOL faculty in getting our ESL Program nationally recognized by CAEP, I have had the opportunity to gain a birds-eye view of curriculum and curricular modification at the programmatic level. Having just returned from sabbatical, I am also currently an interim member in our Department Curriculum Committee. I continue to participate in curricular activities in CPE, and just recently, I reached out to Josh Auld, CAPC Chair, asking if there's anything I can contribute DE-wise, and I'm just now beginning to provide input on DE Policy and review the DE Handbook. As such, I believe that I have the curricular experience necessary and would appreciate the opportunity to serve in CAPC.

Elizabeth Staruch

Department: Theatre and Dance

My name is Liz Staruch, faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance. Currently, I am the co-chair of the CAH Faculty Advisory Committee. Previously on CAPC, I was a member of both the Academic Review and Policy committees and co-chaired the Program Review subcommittee for three years. On behalf of my department, I co-chaired the reaccreditation process for Theatre and Dance, and in 2012 supported the overhaul of our department curriculum to bring the BA Theatre program in line with the Board of Governor’s mandate. All of these experiences serve as inspiration to deepen my commitment of service to the university in terms of curricular and faculty issues that affect each and every department. I would be honored to serve again on CAPC and would appreciate your vote.

Melissa Whidden

Department: Kinesiology

My name is Melissa Whidden and I am an associate professor and assistant chair of the Exercise Science division in the Department of Kinesiology. As assistant chair, I am responsible for coordinating our internship program, for maintaining our accreditation with the Committee for Accreditation in Exercise Sciences and for the assessment of both our undergraduate and graduate programs. In 2018, I helped reorganize our curriculum with the addition of a few key courses. I am chair of the Student Success committee within the College of Health Sciences and over the winter session in 2018, I served on the general education work group for the service learning certificate. Furthermore, I have served on the CAPC Course Review and Revalidation Committee in the past. I would like to serve CAPC again and contribute my experience working in a large department. I would be grateful for your vote. Thank you for your consideration.

Juliet Wunsch

Department: Theatre and Dance

I am a member of the Department of Theatre and Dance, and would be honored to have your support to continue my service to CAPC.

I have served as a member of CAPC since 2010: working on the Policy Committee as well as the General Education Committee. I have served as both chair and co-chair of the Distributive sub-committee, and this year I chaired the new S sub-committee. In these positions, I have had the opportunity to support a growing University wide understanding of how to unify class and departmental goals with the goals of the university-wide General Education Program. The conversation is a two way street: faculty work to demonstrate that their classes meet the General Education goals, but the assessment of general education goals must also morph to embrace the diverse skill-sets and forms of assessments already in use by faculty.

I have a strong interest in understanding student learning. I am open minded and willing to recognize the unique needs of Colleges, Departments and Co-Curricular venues. I am a committed team member, and strong collaborator.

I would greatly appreciate your continued support, and look forward to serving on CAPC.
