Rules for the Election

    • Because there is a maximum of 2 at-large CAPC seats per department, faculty from Communication Studies and Anthropology/Sociology are not eligible for these seats.
    • Each department can have at most three representatives on CAPC.
    • The election is decided by a plurality of those casting votes unless such results violate the previous rule or the number of candidates does not exceed the number of positions to fill. In the later case, each candidate will be voted on by an approve/disapprove ballot.
    • Vacant seats will be filled one at a time with the current vacant seat filled by the candidate with the highest vote count. As each seat is filled, if that candidates department reaches the 3 representatives limit, any remaining candidates from the same department will be disqualified. Votes cast for disqualified candidates, as just defined, will not be considered in filling remaining vacant seats.
    • Each ballot submitted counts as a cast vote.
    • Members elected to at-large seats cannot be nominated for department representative seats.
    • Seats with longer terms will be filled first. In the case of an approve/disapprove ballot, candidates will be ranked according to number of approve votes.

Giovanni Casotti

Department: Biology

I am currently the Chair of Biology and have been serving on CAPC for the past year on the Undergraduate Program Committee (UGPC). I also served for 2 previous terms from 99-03, and again from 04-06. Since then I have attained a NSF award dealing with curricular development specifically intergrating research into the classroom. This experience together with my willingness to continue to serve the faculty, is why I am nonimating myself for a 3 year term on CAPC.

Brian Halsey

Department: Management

I am writing in order to request your support for election to a term as CAPC At-Large Representative. I have served on CAPC since 2011, and during that time I have worked very closely with the CAPC leadership and the faculty at large as our online presence has grown. As a consequence I have deep institutional knowledge of our online and hybrid approval processes at both the undergraduate and graduate levels backed by over 20 years experience in distance education. My goal is to continue to work with CAPC and our faculty in order to rationalize and simplify our approval processes for our online and hybrid courses while maintaining quality across our curriculum. Thank you!

Christine Karpinski

Department: Nutrition

CAPC is one of the great examples of shared governance – a concept that is at the heart of the faculty at WCU. I am at the end of my second term on CAPC, and have served on the Undergraduate Programs Committee (UGPC) for both terms. This past fall, I became Chair of UGPC and served on the CAPC Executive committee. My work with UGPC has been extremely fulfilling because our role is to help faculty develop undergraduate courses and programs that ensure fairness to students and compliance with all policies. We try to make sense of a very complex process that ensures continuity across all programs. It would be a true honor to continue serving on CAPC. Please let me continue to help develop and revise the curriculum, programs and policies at WCU!

Lisa Konigsberg

Department: English Department

I would like to serve on the CAPC at large committee to work on creating stronger connections between the department, the university, and CAPC.

I have worked in the public school system in Pennsylvania for over twenty years, and West Chester University for ten years, and as a result, I have been privy to the long term and immediate impact that curricular and systemic changes can have across the universities, colleges, and majors.

I want to become more deeply involved in West Chester's progress moving forward within the system.

Rodney Mader

Department: English

I would like to serve on CAPC again after a hiatus of one year. I served from 2005-2016, mainly as a member, and then Chair, of the Gen Ed Committee. I also served a term on Academic Review, and in the respective roles of Recording Secretary and Vice Chair. As we continue with implementing the new Gen Ed, it would be helpful if I were officially elected to CAPC. My qualifications for the committee include an eagerness to work across disciplinary boundaries, a respect for shared governance, a focus on student success, and a great deal of experience with university-wide curricular and policy issues. I would be honored to have your vote.

William Nessly

Department: English

As a faculty member in the English department specializing in Asian American and postcolonial studies, my research, teaching and college-level service have focused on promoting diversity and social justice, and the same priorities have motivated my contributions to curriculum revision and academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate level in my department.

I predominantly teach general education courses, including Writing, Writing Emphasis, and Diverse Communities courses. I have taught at the high school level, and think regularly about the needs of future educators. Since I began at WCU in 2011, I have designed a new course, LIT 213: Asian American Literature, and I have also subsequently obtained both the Writing Emphasis and Diverse Communities designations for the course through CAPC.

If elected, I will work to facilitate continued excellence in teaching at our university, and I will work especially to maintain and promote the importance of diversity and social justice in the curriculum. I value the important work done in the committee and subcommittees and I am excited to contribute to the continued growth of our strong academic programs.  Thank you for your support.

James Pruitt

Department: Chemistry

I have proposed and shepherded a graduate pharmaceutical chemistry course through CAPC. I have also updated the requirements and the choice of electives for Pharmaceutical Product Development majors. Currently, I am involved in the preparation of a new Introduction to Chemistry Laboratory course. Throughout each process, I have listened to alternative perspectives on the proposed changes and helped incorporate them into the final set of documents. I wish to be more actively involved in this process and seek your vote to become an at-large member of CAPC.

Elizabeth Staruch

Department: Theatre and Dance

My name is Liz Staruch, faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance. I am currently the co-chair of the CAH Faculty Advisory Council. I supported the work of CAPC as a member of the Academic Review committee and co-chaired the Program Review subcommittee for three years. On behalf of my department, I co-chaired Theatre and Dance’s reaccreditation process, and in 2012 assisted in the overhaul of our department curriculum to bring the BA Theatre program in line with the Board of Governor’s mandate. All of these experiences serve as inspiration to deepen my commitment of service to the university in terms of curricular issues that affect each and every department. I would be honored to serve on CAPC and would appreciate your vote.

Christine Thomas

Department: Nursing

I have been teaching in the nursing department for many years and have previously served on CAPC. In these roles I have become aware of the importance of quality educational programs and policies that support individual departmental accreditation standards and student success. I would like to serve once again on CAPC and uphold the high standards of the educational programs and policies at WCU.
