Rules for the Election
Giovanni CasottiDepartment: Biology I served on CAPC many terms in the past and my most recently for a 1 year current term in 2016-17. I believe one of CAPC's main roles is to help guide faculty put together syllabi using established guidelines. I enjoy the challenges that this brings and would like to continue the opportunity to serve the faculty in this role. Randall CreamDepartment: English WCU's growing emphasis on interdisciplinary programs presents some challenges for a department-based CAPC; these at-large representatives have a special responsibility to serve the community beyond their own departments. This is a mission I'd eagerly adopt, having spent my five years at WCU supporting and contributing to interdisciplinary programs that meet the needs of students and faculty in multiple departments and colleges. I was honored to serve on CAPC for a year, on the Undergraduate Programs and Courses Committee. I'd appreciate your support for this important labor of shared governance. Marjorie Kathleen (Kat) EllisDepartment: Kinesiology Greetings colleagues! My name is Kathleen "Kat" Ellis. I am interested in being considered for the at-large seat on the CAPC committee. Since coming to WCU in 2009, much of my work has been in curriculum and program development and revision. Over the past 5-6 years, I have not only revised numerous courses within Kinesiology, ASL, and Deaf Studies, but also developed a new culture cluster in ASL and minor in Deaf Studies. I also have experience in developing an 100% online graduate certificate program in adapted physical education. In addition, I was honored to be a member of the University Program Review committee. All of these opportunities have allowed me to gain invaluable experience in not only the CAPC process, but also the logistics for curriculum and program development and revision. It is my hope that I will be able to apply these valuable lessons in helping my fellow peers through the CAPC process and successful program/curriculum development and revision. I would sincerely appreciate your vote for the at-large seat on the CAPC committee. Thank you. Scott HeinerichsDepartment: Sports Medicine I value the shared governance process of CAPC and have served for two terms and currently serve on the CAPC executive committee as chair of the general education committee. As chair of the general education committee I have responsibility with my subcommittee members to ensure proposals for distributive, diversity, interdisciplinary, and writing emphasis courses meet university standards. In addition to CAPC I am involved with other curricular projects and initiatives at the university and my profession. For the last four years I have assisted in leading assessment for general education and my oversight of the TLA Center has allowed me to provide professional development for faculty members to reconsider their teaching practices. I currently serve as the program director for our master’s program and serve as a site visitor for my professions accrediting body. These experiences and others have allowed me to be open and responsive as it relates to curricular decisions. I would appreciate your consideration in voting for me to continue as a member of CAPC. Corinne MurphyDepartment: Special Education I seek your continued support as an at-large representative. As current CAPC Chair and past chair of UGPC, I have great appreciation for the team effort required to maintain as well as advance our curriculum to meet the needs of our students. I look forward to continuing to support the development of new programs as well as the revision of existing programs and policies through the shared governance process. Thank you for your consideration. James PruittDepartment: Chemistry Having shepherded a proposal for a new course through CAPC two years ago, I now more fully appreciate the process and the helpful advice from members of CAPC. I have also contributed to curriculum changes in the Chemistry Department and the Pharmaceutical Product Development program. I now believe I am in a position to facilitate others by becoming a member of CAPC and I am asking for your support. Justin RademaekersDepartment: English The Curriculum and Academic Policies Council (CAPC), in addition to Faculty Senate, have endowed us faculty with power to control the quality of our curriculum and university policies; and, it is my belief that in this time of extraordinary and ever-increasing outside influence on higher education and campus cultures, the centrality of CAPC in the development and maintenance of a quality curriculum has never been more important than it is today. In my work as Chair of a Provost-initiated Writing Program Task Force, as the newly appointed Writing across the Curriculum Director, and in my own research on critical thinking across the curriculum, I have met with many faculty to discuss their ambitions for our students and our curriculum. I have also witnessed the false-starts and fizzling-out of ambitious ideas which too often succumb to the challenge of our labor as teachers, scholars, and servants of the academy. If elected to CAPC, I look forward to helping maintain and grow our high quality curriculum while serving as an advocate and resource for supporting ambitious ideas in our curriculum. Melissa ReedDepartment: Kinesiology My name is Melissa Reed and I am a member of the Kinesiology Department. Over the course of my six years at WCU I have had the opportunity to develop new courses, transition traditional courses to hybrid and create entirely online courses. I believe the role of CAPC is integral in developing and recommending academic policy as well as conducting program review. I am excited for the potential opportunity to serve on CAPC and I would look forward to collaborating with the greater university community. Katie SolicDepartment: Literacy I respectfully submit my nomination for consideration for CAPC At-Large Representative. I am a fourth-year faculty member in the Literacy Department in the College of Education and Social Work. I have served as my department's Assessment Coordinator as well as chair of the CESW Assessment and Accreditation committee. I would look forward to the opportunity to serve as a CAPC representative, and support faculty and programs in the curriculum and policy review process. Elizabeth StaruchDepartment: Theatre and Dance My name is Liz Staruch and I am faculty in the Department of Theatre and Dance. I am currently the co-chair of the CAH Faculty Advisory Council. I supported the work of CAPC as a member of the Academic Review committee and co-chaired the Program Review committee for three years. On behalf of my department, I co-chaired Theatre and Dance’s reaccreditation process, and in 2012 assisted in the overhaul of our department curriculum to bring the BA Theatre program in line with the Board of Governor’s mandate. All of these experiences serve as inspiration to deepen my commitment of service to the university in terms of curricular issues. I would be honored to serve on CAPC and would appreciate your vote. Christine ThomasDepartment: Nursing I have been teaching in the nursing department for over 17 years and have previously served on CAPC. In these roles I have become aware of the importance of quality educational programs and policies that support departmental accreditation standards and student success. I would like to serve once again on CAPC and uphold the high standards of the educational programs and policies at WCU. Veronica WilburDepartment: Nursing Please consider me for the CAPC member-at-large position. I possess past institutional and department leadership experiences with the curriculum as a Chair and committee member. I am very interested in participating in the WCU CAPC process. I understand the importance of fostering quality institutional curriculum to meet the outcomes that support student success. I would work on the committee to evaluate submissions for sound pedagogy within the context of the respective disciplines. Joan WoolfreyDepartment: Philosophy I served on CAPC from 2004 - 2007, and then as Chair of the Philosophy Department from 2008 - 2011. I was interim chair again last fall. I have led the Peace & Conflict Studies program (2008-2014), and during the 2013-14 academic year I served as interim director of Women's and Gender Studies. I am well-versed in the workings of the university and care deeply about who we are as an institution. I am very interested in coming back to CAPC after my absence to serve my colleagues and our students. I am especially interested in being a participant in the conversations around Gen Ed reform, and eagerly request your support. Created and copyrighted by Clifford Johnston, 2000-12 |
