Rules for the Election
Thomas AndrewsDepartment: Economics and Finance I have been a member of CAPC for several years. I am currently a member of the executive committee and chair of the program review subcommittee. I am currently involved in the General Education assessment for Middlestates and would appreciate the opportunity to finish the job Jay BerkowitzDepartment: Theatre and Dance I am currently CAPC Vice-Chair and I would be honored to continue serving the faculty and students of the university. Timothy J. BrownDepartment: Communication Studies I welcome the opportunity to continue my service to the campus community by being re-elected to CAPC. For the past two years, I have been a member of the undergraduate program committee. I believe my experience as a department chair along with my previous leadership positions on campus (such as being the Co-Chair of the Multicultural Faculty Commission) well position me to be a strong advocate for undergraduate education. If re-elected, I will continue to serve with a commitment to the mission and values of the university. Thank you for your consideration. Carl CranmerDepartment: Applied Music I would like use my representation to to familiarize myself with the processes used in CAPC to develop curricula, and be able to share the information with others in my department. Kevin W. DeanDepartment: Communication Studies I would welcome your support as I place my name in nomination for election to a term on CAPC for 2008-2010. For over a decade some of the most meaningful “service” I provide to WCU has come through this body and I would like the opportunity to continue this work. As the current CAPC Chair, and having served for several years on the Executive Committee, I am proud of the role I played in helping streamline the CAPC deliberative process. Through our by-law revisions, this critical campus governance body is more efficient, transparent and---particularly through sub-committees---more inclusive of campus participation than ever before. Our commitment to celebrate excellence in teaching---as evidenced by our “best practices” that start most meetings--- provides a wonderful forum, showcasing faculty talent and commitment to pedagogy, something that is far to lacking on the campus. These coming years will bring the Middle States review and the dramatic transition in top administration leadership, such that the majority of the campus community has never seen. I would be honored to continue my service, advocating the essential message of faculty ownership of curriculum and faculty leadership in academic policy. Thanks for your consideration. Eli DeHopeDepartment: Undergraduate Social Work I welcome your support in my nomination for CAPC. For the past eight years I have been committed to actively serving the WCU community; serving on Faculty Senate, Service Learning, LGBTQ Committees, Women's Studies and Social Equity Advisory Boards as well as a number of task forces that I have been asked in which to participate. I have also served as interim chair of my department. I believe that these experiences would allow me to contribute to CAPC and I seek your support to try to do so. Cynthia S. HaggardDepartment: professional and secondary ed I am completing my first term on CAPC. While I have no longing to become a "lifer", I would like the opportunity for another term. Curriculum is my area of expertise and I think it takes a term on CAPC to get acclimated to the work. In these changing times on campus I think there is a need for continutiy. thank you. Wayne HanleyDepartment: History Having previously served on CAPC, I am quite familiar with the expectations of serving on the committee and would welcome the opportunity to serve again. I would bring not only that previous experience with me into the position, but I have worked with the secondary education program (social studies) since arriving at WCU eight years ago and am very well acquainted with the challenges associated with the secondary education programs on campus, as well as NCATE and PDE mandates associated with those programs. My chief concern is the maintaining of the academic integrity of all our academic programs in the face of external (and sometimes, internal) pressures. Jeffrey HarrisDepartment: Health Why should you vote for me for a position on CAPC? I present my case below. Considering the fact that I have been a faculty member here at WCU for 24 years, I have developed a deep understanding of the inner workings of this great institution. During my initial years, I developed the Department of Health’s undergraduate nutrition and dietetics program. Over the years I have been involved in initiating strategic and timely changes in the curriculum as the dietetics field has evolved and accreditation standards have changed. Not only am I extremely familiar with the process of curriculum development at the undergraduate level, but the graduate level as well. From 1985-1995, I served on CAPC and was chair of the academic policies committee from 1992-1994. I left CAPC in 1995 because of intensive programmatic responsibilities; however I am now ready to resume involvement in the important work of CAPC. I believe that I have in the past and will continue to contribute optimism, energy, and attention to detail as a CAPC member. I have current familiarity with CAPC as I have served on the writing emphasis subcommittee of CAPC during the current year. It would be an honor to serve on CAPC again. Those faculty members who have gotten to know me over the years will testify to my reliability and commitment to committee work. I look forward to serving as an active committee member. Susan JohnstonDepartment: Anthropology and Sociology My experience with curriculum development is wide and deep. I have served on my department's curriculum committee and initiated several curriculum initiatives as department chair. In a past life, I was the curriculum coordinator for my program and the chair of the curriclum committee for my college at another institution. I would like to serve on CAPC in order to engage with colleagues around university-wide issues of curriculum development and quality in this important time of transition at WCU. Jan LaceyDepartment: Health I have been serving as a CAPC member alternate this year and hope to contribute more fully as a regular member of this committee. Curricular innovations, decisions and policies are integral to my role as a teacher and advisor, and a member of our Nutrition & Dietetic Program's curriculum committee. I would look forward to participating in this wonderful collaboration across departments in a serious and meaningful way. Thank you. Bruce NorrisDepartment: Educational Development I would be pleased and proud to become an active participant on CAPC. I believe that my past experiences with the Strategic Planning and Accreditation Council (creation of the 2001 Middle States Self-Study, as well as the initial Plan for Excellence), the Strategic Planning and Resource Council (co-chair for 4 years), Coordinator of First Year Student Scheduling (Block Scheduling) and Co-Chair of the University Academic Advising Committee (since 2003) would serve me well in this capacity. One of my major concerns is the effective. timely communication of academic policy changes to students and faculty alike. Michael PearsonDepartment: Communication Studies Hello Colleagues...I have served on CAPC for 12 years (from 1994 to 2006...it might have been as early 1992 but I can't remember). During that time I also served on the CAPC Executive Committee and chaired the CAPC Program Review Committee (God bless whoever is chairing it now). I took two years off and am now fired up to once again get involved with CAPC. If elected by you, I promise to focus on the issues, speak out when I have questions, work for the good of the university and never run for Program Review Committee chair! Thanks for your consideration. Christian PennyDepartment: Professional & Secondary Education I have served as a Curriculum and Academic Policies Council proxy and have a good understanding of the workings of the committee. As a recently tenured and promoted faculty member I would like to serve on more University wide committees, specifically CAPC. If elected I would work hard to represent the University and be an active member on the Curriculum and Academic Policies Council. Helen SchroepferDepartment: Philosophy I am very excited about the opportunity to serve on CAPC! My appetite for this work has been whetted while acting as proxy for my colleague, Joan Woolfrey, during her sabbatical this spring. I am in my third year in the philosophy department, and am eager for wider university service. Creating a curriculum that responds to current issues and student needs is central to what I have accomplished thus far in my department, and I would like to continue this focus on CAPC. I spent this past year updating our religious studies curriculum to be more reflective of the dynamic nature of the discipline and more responsive to the needs of our students. In conjunction with this, I have designed three new courses that have been approved by CAPC over the past three years: Religion in America, Women and Religion, and Introduction to Islam. In addition to serving on a number of department committees, I am also currently serving on the Women’s Studies Steering Committee, the CAS Recruitment Committee, and the Student Research Award Committee. I am also participating in the Curriculum Integration Seminar this semester. Chris StanglDepartment: Political Science I am anxious to serve on CAPC for a number of reasons. First, I believe there are few, if any, other areas of service where us faculty members can have the direct impact that we can on curricular issues. Further, I recently went through the process of applying for "W" designation for one of my courses and throughout I was taking mental notes on the process and its effectiveness. In general, I'm quite interested in curricular considerations and find myself re-reflecting on these issues every time I advise any of my students on their requirements. Also, I've participated in Pedagogy for Engagement seminars, and am in the Curriculum Integration Seminar this semester. I've enjoyed these opportunities and think they both have prepared me for and made me eager to undertake the role of CAPC member. Gretchen Studlien-WebbDepartment: Theatre and Dance I am an Associate Professor in the department of Theatre and Dance. I have been on the faculty at WCU since 1991. I am currently working on the development of new curriculum within the Theatre and Dance program. I’m very interested in learning more about the CAPC process and would be excited and eager to serve on this committee. Christine M ThomasDepartment: Nursing I have been teaching in the nursing department for over 7 years and currently serve as the department’s curriculum chairperson. Through this role I have become aware of the importance of quality educational programs and policies to support a liberal arts education. I will work to uphold the high standards of the educational programs and policies at WCU. Paul WolfsonDepartment: Mathematics During my years as a member of CAPC, I have worked on many committees and served as Executive Secretary. With the coming of a new administration, it will be important to have experienced members on CAPC who are prepared to work to protect faculty professional interests and to maintain the highest possible academic standards. If elected, I will continue this work. Created and copyrighted by Clifford Johnston, 2000-12 |
