Rules for the Election

    • Each department can have at most two representatives on CAPC.
    • Due to the above restriction CAPC can not accept any nominations from Biology,Psychology, and History.
    • Faculty may self-nominate for an at-large seat, a school representative seat, or both. Faculty members who are not elected to an at-large seat will not automatically be added to the college representative category. Any faculty member wishing to be considered for both seats must initially apply for both. There will be no second nomination period. Faculty members elected to at-large seats will have their nomination automatically withdrawn from the appropriate representative ballot before the election for those seats begins.
    • The election is decided by a plurality of those casting votes unless such results violate the previous rule or the number of candidates does not exceed the number of positions to fill. In the later case, each candidate will be voted on by an approve/disapprove ballot.
    • Vacant seats will be filled one at a time with the current vacant seat filled by the candidate with the highest vote count. As each seat is filled, the candidate filling that seat and any other candidates from the same department as the candidate filling that seat will be disqualified. Votes cast for disqualified candidates, as just defined, will not be considered in filling remaining vacant seats.
    • Each candidate selected counts as a cast vote.
    • Members elected to at-large seats cannot be nominated for school representative seats.
    • Seats with longer terms will be filled first. In the case of an approve/disapprove ballot, candidates will be ranked according to number of approve votes.

Jay Berkowitz

Department: Theatre and Dance

I have served on CAPC and have been a member of the Executive Committee. I am a department chair and serve the university as a special assistant for academic policy in the office of academic affairs. I believe I have the academic and administrative experience to make a continuing contribution to CAPC.

Timothy J. Brown

Department: Communication Studies

I look forward to continuing my strong university service as an elected member of CAPC. For the past two years, I have been the chair of the Frederick Douglass Institute and I chaired and organized the Multicultural Faculty Retreat in 2004 and 2005. Also, I serve as the General Education Coordinator for the Department of Communication Studies. In addition, I am familiar with CAPC as I have served on its Program Review Committee and I have been a proxy for our department representative. Given my experience and work ethic, I believe I would make an excellent member of CAPC. Thank you for supporting my candidacy.

Darla Spence Coffey

Department: Undergraduate Social Work

My experience serving as the interim Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs this year has afforded me the opportunity to work closely with a number of faculty across the university. I have especially enjoyed working with CAPC, and have a stronger sense of the importance of faculty involvement in the curriculum and policy issues on our campus. I hope now to serve as a representative - it would be an honor to do so.

Kevin W. Dean

Department: Communication Studies

I welcome your support as I seek a fifth term on CAPC. For those of you whom I don’t know, I am a professor in the Department of Communication Studies where I have coordinated the communication component of the Summer Academic Developmental program for fifteen years. I also am serving in my ninth year as the Director of the University’s Honors Program where I have been actively engaged in curriculum development and review. Because of the wide range of students with whom I interact, I have found working with curricular and policy issues most rewarding. During my time on CAPC I have served as Recording Secretary, Chair of the General Assembly, and I currently serve as Chair of the General Education committee. Our campus faces some interesting challenges in the coming years and I would enjoy being part of the formal debate. Thanks for your consideration.

Dottie Ives-Dewey

Department: Geography and Planning

I have served on CAPC this past year (and also served on the Graduate Committee). I have a strong interest in curricular issues at the graduate and undergraduate levels. I believe I can make a contribution to curricular and academic policy discussions to best serve the needs of our students. I welcome the opportunity to continue to serve on this important committee.

Sharon Kletzien

Department: Literacy

CAPC plays an essential role in assuring excellence in our programs and creating policies to encourage student achievement and success. I would consider it a privilege to continue to serve on this body.

Bruce Norris

Department: Educational Development

I have been active in the promotion and advancement of academic advising on campus for the past several years. CAPC actions impact the advising process in many ways. By participating on CAPC, I can bring that perspective to the committee, and can aid in the communication of policy and curricular changes to the faculty advisors through an existing network of academic advising liaisons and committee members.

I also spent seven years working directly with the Plan for Excellence (two years on the Strategic Planning and Accreditation Council, the group that created the Plan, and then 5 years as Co-Chair of the Strategic Planning and Resource Council, the campus advocate of the Plan). The decisions made in CAPC play a significant role in the fulfillment of many aspects of the Plan. I believe the insights gained through my participation in the planning process will be useful to me as a CAPC representative.

Alexander Rozin

Department: Music Theory and Composition

I am just finishing my first term on CAPC and would like to continue working on curricular issues at the University level. As someone actively engaged in improving the curriculum and writing a textbook at the department level, I hope to have the opportunity to learn more about successful strategies in other programs.

Paul R Wolfson

Department: Mathematics

In my four terms on CAPC, I have served on several CAPC subcommittees and now also as CAPC Secretary. During this time, I have focused on (1) maintenance of academic standards and (2) creation of appealing new courses and programs. I have worked to give the faculty a strong voice in academic matters. I would appreciate your support so that I may continue to work as I have done. Thank you.
