Department: Music Theory and Composition

I respectfully seek your support for the position of APSCUF Vice President.

I have served for the last four years on Executive Council, first as Recording Secretary, responsible for minutes for LDA and Meet and Discuss, and currently as Corresponding Secretary. In my current position I am chair of campus elections. I have been involved in many local policy discussions and reviews, and have represented the union on both the Academic Year Model Taskforce and, most recently, the 25% Cap Committee. I have also served as an alternate state delegate when my schedule permits.

As Vice President of APSCUF local, my primary duty would be to chair Meet and Discuss, which I have already done for a year. I have been an active member of the Meet and Discuss Team for the last four years.

My primary concern as a union member is the continuing growth of class sizes across campus, especially in smaller programs such as my own. The AYM Taskforce found this to be largely a result of the continuous budget crises of the past few years combined with a lack of institutional analysis concerning enrollment. This problem is getting worse year by year. Not only do faculty work harder each time our enrollment grows without appropriate faculty growth, but our attention to each student is continually diminishing - an argument that management has dismissed based on citations of slight and debatable academic research denying the effectiveness of small class sizes.

I believe that we need a long-term plan for recovering smaller class sizes where they are pedagogically sound and when the economy improves. I would continue to work on this issue as an active member of the APSCUF Executive Council.
