The past two years, local APSCUF has worked to make the union stronger. The annual picnic and open house have provided a social atmosphere for members to interact and share concerns with APSCUF leadership. We have worked with management whenever possible to improve the working conditions at WCU, but at other times we have remained resolute in maintaining equity for faculty. The tenure policy remains unsigned because of a management concern over SAP implementation of a long standing practice regarding spring anniversary tenure candidates. APSCUF refuses to accept that implementation of a piece of software should be allowed to override a practice that has provided equity to the faculty.

I have also learned a great deal in the past two years. The process by which APSCUF constructs and approves local policies is not clearly understood. If re-elected, I will make that process more transparent and more systematically open to faculty input. The Membership Survey has provided several areas for APSCUF to work on improving policy including evaluation, promotion, tenure, teacher/scholar models, faculty development, and increasing faculty workload. We have begun a systematic look at student evaluations and will take steps to improve them and how they are administered and used.

Finally, we are preparing for the end of another contract. Unlike the recent past, this time we are working to be proactive and not reactive. We are preparing now for the day our contract expires so that we do not get caught by PASSHE delays. In the coming days, we will complete our preparations and wait for PASSHE to deliver on a fair contract or for APSCUF to call for a job action. I have carried your messages to Harrisburg, some have been heard; others have not. I will continue to pressure state APSCUF to keep our interests in mind—good salary, good health care, summer school pay based on current salary, improvements in parental leave, making whole the promotion class of 2003, and domestic partner benefits. With your continued support, I believe we will achieve a good contract in 2007.

Thank you.
