Rules for the Election
Clifford A JohnstonDepartment: Mathematics My first experience with APSCUF was the day after I was hired. For some reason, the administration at the time decided that the tenure-track position for which I had been hired should be converted to a one-year temporary position. On the advice of my new chairperson, I visited the APSCUF office and spoke with APSCUF president Michael Montemuro. He assured me it would be worked out, and it was. That meeting was a milestone. I have always believed in the power and purpose of organized labor, but, as important, I believe that APSCUF serves to protect the faculty from the whims of the administration. I have been involved with APSCUF for 8 years serving initially on the Nominations and Elections Committee and holding the offices of Corresponding Secretary, Grievance Chairperson, and Vice-President. This semester, I have been serving as APSCUF President while Linda Myrsiades has been on sabbatical. I have served with all of the past WCU APSCUF presidents including Michael Montemuro, Em Jones, and Linda Myrsiades. I have learned a great deal from each of them and will endeavor to continue the strong leadership they each displayed. If elected, next semester I will start initiatives in three areas: membership, new faculty issues, and temporary faculty issues. These initiatives will not detract from the primary duty of holding the administration accountable to the contract. That should always be the primary mission of APSCUF. To help carry out that mission, I, or representatives from APSCUF, will establish and maintain active lines of communication with other large and influential faculty groups on campus such as CAPC, the Faculty Senate, and the Council of Chairs. Finally, whenever possible, I will work with the administration to forward our mutual interests for the benefit of the university and our students. Thank you for voting and best wishes for a successful semester. Created and copyrighted by Clifford Johnston, 2000-12 |
